Donald Trump has already revealed that Modi would soon visit the US to strengthen the partnership with India and to have discussions on various other important issues. But no confirmed dates were mentioned. According to recent sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would travel to Washington from Paris on February 12th.
Modi’s Scheduled Travel To US
As per the schedule, Modi will travel to France next week and will be attending an AI summit hosted by President Emmanuel Macron on February 10th and 11th. Reports suggest that Trump too was invited to attend the Summit but unfortunately, he would not be attending the Summit. Hence Vice President JD Vance will be representing the US on behalf of Trump at the Summit. After this Modi would travel from Paris to Washington and will have a bilateral meeting with Trump on February 13th.
What Could be the Possible Discussions?
Trump had previously said that PM Modi would be soon visiting the US after having a telephone conversation with him after his inauguration day. During that time he stated that Trade and illegal migration would be discussed in detail to deepen the strategic partnership with India including the Quad in the Indo-Pacific. Trump also emphasized that he needs a fair-trading relationship with India, mentioning Modi’s statement that “India would do the right thing when it comes to illegal migration”. In return, he promised to reduce the trade deficits.
Other Leaders Also To Visit Soon
Modi is one among the selected group of leaders to Visit Trump in the first month of his second term as the President of US. Other leaders too are visiting Trump in the coming weeks. Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu comes first on the list to call upon Trump. Trump is also meeting Jordan’s King Abdullah II next week
As far as Modi’s visit is concerned no confirmation came until late yesterday evening. Until now according to various sources, no community event participation or a scheduled travel to a city to meet the business leaders has been scheduled for Modi. A planned dinner with Trump alone is on the cards.
Other Key Points of Discussion
To reduce the differences in trade, India has recently mentioned in its budget to slash the tariffs imposed on high-end motorcycles and the Indian government is expecting a reaffirmation from the US on commitment to the initiative on critical and emerging technology that the Biden administration has launched previously. This has been launched to expand the technology partnership and boost defense industrial cooperation between the US and India. expects strong convergence in this area as Trump’s administration has promised the transfer of advanced US military technology to India.
India would also try to relaunch its negotiations for a comprehensive trade agreement that didn’t work out last time. also hopes to have at least a mini-deal that would restore the Generalized System of Preferences benefit that was revoked by the Trump’s administration in 2019 due to restricted Indian market access.
This visit will also see negotiations from both sides to underline the strategic convergence in the Indo-Pacific leading to a close Partnership between India and the US. The strong partnership will ultimately develop a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous region.
